About the project

Powering the World: Looking at Welsh Industry through Archives, 2009-2011: This Archives and Record Council Wales collobarative project was funded by the Pilgrim Trust under the National Cataloguing Grants Scheme. Ten of the most valuable un-catalogued business collections from north and south Wales were catalogued and are now available through their holding repositories. The collections were:

An article about the project featured in the latest issue of CyMAL magazine (pp 26-27)

Profiting from Powering the World, 2011-2012: ARCW was awarded funding by CyMAL for a follow on project ‘Profiting from Powering the World’. The new project will promote the collections which have been catalogued, highlight the importance of business archives and explore ways to encourage their use for research.

Project activities: 

·         Exhibition panels for a touring exhibition to be shown at participating archives and other archive, museum and library venues around Wales

·         Leaflet to tie in with exhibition, promoting use of business collections and encouraging their deposit

·         New area on Archifau Cymru Archives Wales (ACAW) devoted to business archives, their importance and use, with digitised highlights

·         Highlights from the PTW catalogued collections will be digitised and used for exhibition, ACAW website and contributed to the People’s Collection Wales (PCW)

·         Work with academic staff at Swansea University on the use of business archives for teaching and research

·         A one-day workshop for researchers throughout Wales exploring the value of business archives for research

·         Cataloguing of South Wales Miners’ Museum collection held at West Glamorgan Archive Service
